Heritage of Blaž Potočnik

Blaž Potočnik came from the Gorenjska countryside, which provided most of the intellectuals at the end of the 18th century, including Jernej Kopitar, Janez Bleiweiss, Matija Čop and France Prešeren. He cooperated with the last named in Kranjska čbelica. Kranj can be said to be not just the town of Prešeren and Bleiweis but also of Potočnik. He lived at a time of lively cultural events, when the Slovene nation began to awaken. Himself an ardent patriot, he was to the fore in founding reading rooms, showed his concern for education with the writing of a grammar book, educational essays and organising a school in Šentvid above Ljubljana and encouraged Slovene culture. He wanted to bring national poetry closer to the people and to improve church singing by writing hymns and composing melodies for them, and to awaken culture with numerous theatre plays and dramatic texts. He devoted his powers above all to spiritual pastoral work in Šentvid, where he also worked more widely; he was an adviser of small businessmen there, he had the Šentvid church renovated and above all helped farming folk, including with the invention of a milking cart and advice on health.
