IVAN FRANKE

Ivan Franke spada v krog realistov. Umrl je v Ljubljani 15. oktobra 1927.

IVAN FRANKE

(Dobje pri Poljanah nad Škofjo Loko, 16 May 1841 – Ljubljana, 15 October 1927)

Gorenjska museum received the legacy of the painter Ivan Franke as a bequest from his granddaughter, Magdelena Majda Franke. The material includes paintings, sketches, drawings, photographs, documents and books that were owned by the family after the painter's death and will be exhibited in the Franke memorial room in Layer House in Tomšičeva ulica in Kranj.
Ivan Franke was born on 16 May 1841 in Dob near Poljane. When he was still very young, the family moved to Cerklja na Gorenjskem. He studied painting at the Academy in Vienna and in Venice, from where he set out in 1873 on a journey to China. From 1878 to 1889, he was professor of drawing at Kranj gymnasium. During this time, he devoted himself a great deal to painting, as well as breeding fish. He thus captured and artificially fertilised trout, first on the Sava near Okoroglo and then in Lajh in Kranj. In 1882,the Vienna central committee appointed him as conservator for Carniola. From 1889 he lived in Ljubljana, where, in addition to teaching, he painted and wrote a lot. Franke's painting opus is extremely prolific; in terms of motif he was most committed to landscapes, portraits and sacral painting. Ivan Franke was one of the Realists. He died in Ljubljana on 15 October 1927.
