FRANJO SIRC, KRANJSKI TRGOVEC IN INDUSTRIALEC

Franjo Sirc, Kranj Merchant and Industrialist

Franjo Sirc, born 27 November 1891, finished the Czech-Slav Merchant Academy in Prague. He worked first in banking although he did not abandon the idea of trade, which his father had already started and his mother continued but their efforts in wholesale trade did not succeed.
While still a bank director, he began to cooperate with foreign manufacturers who had started to build a textile factory in Kranj. He was able to exploit the economic and political circumstances and thus collected the necessary capital to set up his own factory. The mechanical textile mill in Stražišč near Kranj started work in 1930. Successful business enabled Sirc to start to expand and modernise the textile factory, right up to the outbreak of war.
At the time of the occupation, Sirc and his wife withdrew to Ljubljana and the Germans confiscated the factory and other property. After the war, although the remaining property was at first returned to him, he was sentenced in a political process to ten years imprisonment with forced labour and his entire property seized. He died on 8 November 1950 because of increasingly poor health.
