The author Ivan Pregelj in Gorenjska

The writer Ivan Pregelj was born on 27 October 1883 in Most na Soči in the Tolmin area. He lost his parents when he was eight years old. His talent for writing was discovered by his confirmation teacher, the parish priest Jožef Fabjan. He decided to make Pregelj’s education possible. Pregelj already wrote poems, sketches and short plays as a pupil and student. Fabijan also supported Pregelj at Vienna University, where he studied Slovene and German languages. He completed his studies with a doctorate in 1909. He then served as a teacher for one year each in Gorica, Pazin in Istria and in Idrija. In 1912, he was transferred to the gymnasium in Kranj, to where he moved with his family, and in 1925 to Ljubljana. He created his most important works while living in Kranj: Tolminci (Tolmin people), Zadnji upornik (The last rebel), Ballads in Prose, Plebanus Joannes, Thabiti kumi, Bogovec Jernej, Peter Pavel Glavar, Simon iz Praš (Simon from Praš), Otroci sonca (Children of the sun), Kompostelski romarji (Pilgrims of Kompostel), Dr. Anton Muznik. He used his spare time for long walks, during which he got to know the countryside and people and collected material for writing. He wrote especially at night and on free days. He published his sketches and short stories in the magazine Dom in svet. He was also editor of this magazine for some time. He died on 30 January 1960 in Ljubljana and is buried in Dravlje.
