SLEDOVI RIMSKE VOJSKE V KRANJU

Prispevek uvodoma okvirno obravnava strukturo rimske vojske in proces vojaške zasedbe naših krajev v 2. in 1. stol. pr. Kr.

TRACES OF THE ROMAN ARMY IN KRANJ

In the introduction, the article presents the structure of the Roman army, the process of military occupation of this region in the 2nd and 1st century B.C and the traces that the Roman army left in the region surrounding Kranj (Šmartno pri Cerkljah, Mengeš). The article takes a closer look at individual archaeological finds in Kranj that can be connected to the weaponry and attire of the Roman soldier: parts of a Roman sword sheath (pict. 4: 1, 5, 13), fragments of a helmet (pict. 4: 4, 6), a spear (pict. 4: 16), an arrow (pict. 4: 17), a shield (pict. 4: 7, 8), armour (pict. 4: 2, 15), footwear (pict. 4: 11 a–h) and garb (pict. 4: 9, 10). A comparison with other similar finds allows us to date the items in the middle Augustan period (from 15 B.C. to 14 A.D.), when the army was there with the task to protect the early Roman forts and mercantile posts. The article closes with an emphasis on the economic and social impact that the presence of the Roman Army had on a specific region.
