KRANJ AND ITS SURROUNDINGS IN LATE ANTIQUITY – RECORDS BY A GEOGRAPHER FROM RAVENNA AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATA

Around the year 700, an anonymous geographer from Ravenna described the land of Karneola and its 25 settlements in his Cosmographia. The first was Carnium/Kranj, followed by six settlements of an undetermined location. The authors of the article use archaeological data to outline the importance of Kranj and present the archaeological sites in its vicinity that could represent the remains of the six unknown settlements, sites such as Puštal nad Trnjem near Škofja Loka, Sv. Jakob nad Potočami and Gradišče nad Bašljem. The sites contain the ruins of high altitude settlements from the end of the 5th and the 6th century. Individual findings suggest that there were additional settlements on Šmarna Gora and Sv. Lovrenc nad Bašljem, while directly over the river Sava, opposite to Kranj, stood an as of yet undiscovered settlement connected to the burial ground by the old Šmartin church (the Iskra intersection).
