LITERARNO OBZORJE SLAVISTKE IN KRANJSKE PROFESORICE MARIJE ŽAGAR (1921–1998)

THE LITERARY HORIZONS OF SLAVICIST AND PROFESSOR  FROM KRANJ, MARIJA ŽAGAR (1921–1998)

The article tries to shed some light on the literary horizons of slavicist and Slovenian language professor Marija Žagar (1921, Jesenice – 1998, Kranj) based on the correspondence between her and the Trieste writer Boris Pahor. The correspondence lasted for over 35 years. The letters were published by Slovenska matica in 2010 in a collection entitled Sončna ura: Pisemska korespondenca Borisa Pahorja in Marije Žagar (1961–1996) (Sundial: Letters of correspondence between Boris Pahor and Marija Žagar). The author of the present article wrote the foreword and notes for this collection. In the correspondence, Žagar mentions various Slovenian and foreign works of literature, allowing us to draw some conclusions as to the breadth of her literary horizons. Since Marija Žagar was not a writer, it is not possible to trace the influences that other writers had on her works, but the influences can attest to her considerable knowledge in the field of literature and prove that she was indeed well-read. Žagar was particularly skilled at applying literary knowledge to current events, to her interpersonal relationships and her experience and understanding of the world.
