THE DEVELOPMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOLING IN KRANJ

Secondary schooling in Kranj began 205 years ago, when, during the period of the Illyrian provinces, the French High School was established. When the French left, so did the High School. It only returned in 1861, when the Lower Classical Gymnasium was established – the name, ‚gynmnasium‘ (gimnazija), persisted to this day, with some minor gaps inbetween. The rapid development of the textile, footwear and rubber industries necessitated the appropriate support by vocational schools. When these industrial sectors began disappearing, so did the associated schools. With the development of the engineering and electrical industries following the Second World War, the appropriate trade schools began appearing. They still exist, supported by new programmes that include computer science, information science and communications. What was once a course for educating workers in the dairy industry grew into a biotechnical centre that offers a wide array of courses, from agriculture to livestock breeding, gardening and horticulture and all the way to the ecological cultivation of food and environmentalism.
