ZAČETKI BOLNIŠNICE ZA GINEKOLOGIJO IN PORODNIŠTVO V KRANJU IN NJENA UTEMELJITELJA, PROF. DR. SREČKO RAINER IN PRIM. IGOR VETER

Igor Veter.

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS HOSPITAL IN KRANJ AND ITS ESTABLISHERS, PROF. DR. SREKO RAINER  AND SENIOR DOCTOR IGOR VETER

In 1955, a new maternity hospital was established in Kranj. In 1959, it was expanded and given a new name, Gynaecology and Obstetrics Hospital Kranj. It became an important centre for gynaecology in the Upper Carniola region, given even more prominence by Prof. Dr. Sreko Rainer, who arrived there from the Gynaecological Clinic in Ljubljana. The establishment was led for many years by Gynaecologist and Obstetrician Igor Veter. They had highly developed, modern gynaecologic diagnostics and conservative and operative therapies. They introduced early cancer detection in female genitalia and operational treatment. They would only send patients to the Gynaecologic Clinic in Ljubljana for major interventions (Wertheim operations). Data about the first decade before the building of the new hospital, now almost too far away for memory to recall, is kept by the gynaecologist and obstetrician Vida Komelj Beravs, who kindly spoke with us for this article. With great attention and care, she helped women with gynaecologic and obstetric issues, childbirth, examinations, cytology exams, colposcopies, cervical conisations, etc. Thanks to her testimony, the memories of that first decade of the hospital will be preserved for future generations.
